Ethnic CompositionThere are no indigenous inhabitants of Christmas Island, and the population is made up of immigrants from around the world. As of the 2011 Australian census, the estimated resident population of Christmas Island is 2072. As shown is the graph beside, the ethnic composition of the island 65% Chinese, 20% Malay, 10% European and 5% Indian and Eurasian. However, these results exclude the the highly variable population at the islands Christmas island immigrant reception and processing centre, which as of June 2014 holds 1077 asylum seekers. For the most part, this is Indonesian, Middle Eastern and some East Asian immigrants.

Religious CompositionDue to the many different ethnicities that inhabit the area, there is many different religions and cultural beliefs practiced on the island. In 2011, the Australian government conducted a report which estimated the religions practised on Christmas Island. The results of this report showed 75% Buddhism, 12% Christianity, 10% Islam and Other 3%. The 'other' category consists of Traditional Chinese Religions like Taoism and Confucianism.
